18 Facts about the Trump-Russia Indictment Scandal

It’s been 48 hours since news broke about two former Trump campaign officials and one business associate being charged with the special counsel’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 Election.

These are the first indictments in the Special Counsel’s investigation which mark a major turning point in the Russia probe, but they are likely just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Three Americans with significant Russian business connections contributed almost $2 million to political funds controlled by Donald Trump.

2. Those donations began flowing to the Republican Party around the time Trump became the Republican nominee.

3. In June 2016, Trump Tower meeting involving Trump’s son Don Jr., son-in-law Jared Kushner, then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and Russian emissaries had a meeting at Trump Tower about lifting U.S. sanctions on Russia.

4. Monday, Three people have been charged: Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign official; Richard Gates, his business partner; George Papadopoulos, former Trump campaign foreign policy advisor.

 5. Manafort, Gates, and Papadopoulos are the first to be charged in Robert Mueller’s probe into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election.

 6. Manafort served as Trump’s campaign chairman during the Republican National Convention (RNC) and played a significant role in shaping the Republican Party’s platform.

 7. Manafort and Gates have been charged with conspiracy against the U.S. and 12 other various charges that go back to 2006 through this year.

8. Manafort is accused of conspiracy against the United States and money laundering before, during, and after he ran the Trump campaign.

9. In a separate development, foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos agreed to plead guilty to making false statements to the FBI.

10. Papadopoulos plead guilty to lying to the FBI about his involvement with foreign nationals who had close ties to the Russian government. This shows the direct link between Trump’s campaign and claims of Russia’s collusion.

11. Manafort and his business partner Rick Gates made tens of millions of dollars lobbying on behalf of a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine. The European Centre for Modern Ukraine (the Centre) is the entity that Manafort and Gates used to conceal their illegal activities.

12. Mueller alleges that Manafort and Gates are lying about their cover story using the Centre to distance themselves from Ukraine.

13. Manafort and Gates swindled the banks that loaned him money so that he could withdraw more money at lower interest rates.

14. The indictment alleges that Gates transferred $3 million from offshore accounts to “other accounts he controlled.” We’re left wondering what these other accounts are and how are they connected to Trump?

15. Manafort laundered over $18 million from offshore accounts to purchase luxury goods, properties, and services for himself.

 16. Trump’s first Tweets claims “NO COLLUSION”. Leading us to believe there is probably collusion…

17. If convicted of charges, Mueller will go after Manafort’s personal assets including various properties and life insurance policies tied to the various charges.

18. Manafort and Gates were released on house arrest until their next court date on Nov. 2, in order to allow the lawyers to mediate a full bail package.

The recent developments in this investigation underscore the seriousness of the crimes committed. Republicans need to commit to protecting our democracy and making sure this never happens again.
