Press Secretary

The Texas Democratic Party (TDP) is seeking a Press Secretary to work closely with the organization’s Communications Director, communications team, and other leaders to execute a long-term organizational communications vision and strategy. The Press Secretary will be experienced in pitching national, state, and local reporters, bloggers and broadcast media; and in writing press releases, statements and op-eds. The Press Secretary will also be expected to contribute on several office-wide projects including large-scale fundraisers, press conferences, large events, elections, the Convention and other TDP gatherings. Additionally, the Press Secretary will work closely with the digital team to keep all communications, messages, and branding clear and concise.

This position is preferred in Austin.

Job Details and Responsibilities:

  • Help oversee the organization’s daily press outreach, editing press releases, talking points, statements and op-eds as needed;
  • Daily tracking of state and national legislative efforts as it relates to the Democratic Party and issues facing our membership;
  • Identify rapid response opportunities daily and work with staff to implement response to them;
  • Build relationships with top national, state, and local reporters, producers, correspondents and editors;
  • Work with legislative leadership to take advantage of press opportunities;
  • Maintain and update media lists.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent people, written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously under strict deadlines;
  • Responsive and positive team player who enjoys versatility and constant new challenges;
  • Proficient in Google Docs, media-monitoring software, Facebook, Twitter and other social media tools; and
  • A strong commitment to Democratic values.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2-4 years working in political and/or advocacy communications;
  • Previous experience of at least one full campaign or advocacy campaign cycle working in a communications role;
  • Strong interest in Texas politics;
  • On-the-record experience;
  • Experience with social media and digital branding;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Demonstrated abilities in a fast-paced environment; and
  • Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination.

Office Manager

The Texas Democratic Party is seeking an organized and enthusiastic professional to be our Office Manager. This is a full time position based in Austin, Texas. The Office Manager will report to the COO and work closely with the Executive and Operations Departments.

Duties would include: 

  • Supervise and manage the physical office facility
  • Being the public face of the office: answering phones and managing the public email inbox
  • Making staff travel arrangements or travel arrangements for the Party Officers
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned
  • Overflow assistance for the data department, handling tickets for data department like VAN account creation or creating survey questions
  • Coordinate with staff on office and digital needs
  • Assist with collecting and processing contributions
  • Assist with intern management and job postings
  • Maintain and improve upon organizational systems
  • Maintain phone system, copier, internet, postage meter, etc.

Texas Coordinated Campaign Director

The Texas Democratic Party and Beto for Texas are seeking a Coordinated Campaign Director to develop and manage the 2022 coordinated statewide program. We are looking for a highly motivated, top-tier self-starter to manage coordination between various campaigns and stakeholders in addition to designing and implementing the coordinated program. The ideal candidate will be assertive and able to work quickly in rapidly changing and high-stress environments. Candidates should be comfortable dealing with sensitive information and maintain constant confidentiality. Candidates must be willing to travel and have dependable transportation.

Responsibilities: 

  • Design and direct overall coordinated program, in consultation with stakeholders, to meet electoral goals.
  • Manage the coordinated budget to optimize coordinated resources.
  • Build coordinated strategies on messaging, organizing, voter protection, operations, data and paid programming to ensure strategic imperatives are met.
  • Regularly convene the members of the coordinated campaign table to work towards shared priorities.
  • Create a reporting structure to ensure accountability of staff, programs, and activities by developing, setting, and implementing performance milestones, and ensuring these milestones are met and progress is continually demonstrated toward their fulfillment.
  • Advise on overall voter-contact strategy, including but not limited to voter-identification, voter-registration, and get-out-the-vote drives conducted by the coordinated campaign.
  • Work with the Data / Analytics team to set data-driven goals and develop a system to track progress to goals.
  • Maintain relationships with stakeholders including regular reporting and providing recurring updates as the coordinated campaign progresses.
  • Negotiate and manage vendor contracts for paid services.
  • Manage the development of a statewide coordinated GOTV plan to support Democrats up and down the ticket.
  • Build communication structures to collaborate, share information, and track progress toward goals with partnering campaigns, local parties, and state and national allies.
  • Regularly update and offer guidance to statewide campaign slate.
  • Proficiency in campaign and general technology including NPGVAN, Google Apps, Hustle, Microsoft Office apps, etc.

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of at least two (2) cycles of senior level organizing experience in federal, statewide, or advocacy campaigns is required
  • Record of working with national, state and local political players engaged in electoral strategies and programs
  • Experience managing multi-level staffing structures
  • Familiarity with Federal and State financial compliance
  • Ability to hire and manage diverse staff
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with staff and external stakeholders, from elected officials to grassroots activists
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Ability to work long, irregular hours, and maintain a positive attitude
  • General understanding of campaign finance laws and other applicable federal and state regulations governing coordinated campaigns

Salary & Benefits:

Deputy Voter Protection Director

The Texas Democratic Party is seeking a talented Deputy Voter Protection Director to join the Voter Protection Team and help ensure that all eligible Texans are able to cast their ballot in 2022. This person will lead aspects of the Party’s voter protection program (e.g., election worker training & support, vote-by-mail support, and/or poll watching). They will also support the General Counsel on matters ranging from reviewing contracts to drafting briefs for voting rights litigation.

The Texas Democratic Party is creating a comprehensive educational and action plan to expand opportunities for Texans to be registered to vote, educated on all aspects of voting, and have full range of protections from any form of intimidation or voter suppression in casting a ballot or full participation in all aspects of Texas government. This person will be an integral part of that effort.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Voter Protection Team’s programmatic efforts in one or more of the following areas: election worker training & support, vote-by-mail support, mail ballot chase & cure, and/or poll watching (to be assigned depending on your skills and experiences).
  • Conduct legal research and assist the team with legal questions relating to voting procedures, voter suppression, intimidation, or efforts aimed at disenfranchising voters of Texas.
  • Support the General Counsel in contract drafting and review, answering legal questions from various departments, and briefing and assisting with pending litigation on behalf of the Texas Democratic Party.
  • Identify voting problems through collaboration with County Chairs & other stakeholders, hotline reports, monitoring the news and other resources and support the mobilization of a coordinated response within the Party. Strategies will include advocacy, public education campaigns, and others.
  • Recruit, train and organize volunteers to support the Voter Protection Team’s goals.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with select county-level officials to advance proactive improvements to voting, respond to threats, and resolve issues for individual voters, with a particular focus on issues impacting people of color and voters with disabilities.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Voter Protection Director.

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • A licensed attorney who is licensed in Texas or is eligible to waive into the Texas Bar.
  • Experience with campaigns – The ideal candidate has professional voter protection experience, but voter protection experience in a volunteer role (e.g., poll watcher, poll worker) is valued, as is campaign experience in another area (e.g., organizing/field).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills – you understand that litigation is a tool in your toolbelt but often the one of last resort, and you can find and utilize a variety of approaches to solve a problem.
  • Strong lens and judgement on issues of race and equity – Clearly and consistently articulates a sophisticated understanding of racial equity and structural racism as it relates to the work we do and how we operate internally at the Texas Democratic Party. Operates and organizes from a racial justice perspective, with emphasis on voter suppression’s disproportionate impact on communities of color.
  • Grace under pressure: You thrive in a fast-paced environment, are decisive, and maintain your composure and teamwork skills under pressure.

Distributed Voter Registration Program Manager

This person oversees a statewide program that coordinates with county parties, campaigns, and volunteers to register local voters.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the voter registration and data teams to research voter registration trends and develop targets for outreach
  • Create tracking systems to support volunteer-led voter registration
  • Curate and disseminate best practices for lit drops, canvasses, and other field activities
  • Identify the language access needs of the program and implement the program to support unregistered voters who need voter registration support in languages other than English
  • Work with super volunteers and party leaders to plan and troubleshoot program issues
  • Support other voter registration work, as needed/assigned

Required Skills:

  • You have at least 3 years of professional experience, in or outside of the political world
  • Experience as a canvasser or field organizer for an election or issue advocacy campaign
  • You have managed and organized data as part of your work — you are very comfortable with Google Forms and Google Sheets
  • You have experience working with coalitions
  • You are a team player who is good at building and maintaining bidirectional, collaborative professional relationships

Relational Organizing Program Manager

This person will manage a program that uses relational organizing tactics to reach voters. The program will have a paid component where you hire community members to engage their own networks in politics, including registering them to vote. The program will also have a volunteer-based component where you work with Democratic organizations and leaders across the state to engage their own networks.

Core Responsibilities

  • Hire and manage the paid staff for this program
  • Develop the systems, protocols, guides and resources to support both the paid and volunteer elements of the program
  • Design and develop recruitment tactics for paid relational voter registration staff members
  • Design and develop screening tactics to identify ideal paid relational voter registration candidates, in collaboration with the Operations Team
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of tools, strategies, and tactics used in the program and develop new options, where appropriate
  • Conduct regular check-ins with paid staff and provide coaching, guidance, and advice to support program success
  • Collaborate with the Data Team to effectively test the program in different communities and geographies and then analyze the results to provide  recommendations to senior staff on where and how to most effectively scale the program 
  • Other duties as assigned by manager

Required Skills

  • Experience managing paid canvassers, phone bankers, or other staff for voter outreach (or similarly staffed program)
  • Experience organizing volunteers to do voter contact
  • You have a systems orientation to developing resources and tools that will scale as the program grows and you hire additional relational organizers
  • You have developed tools and resources for use in a campaign
  • Experience coaching staff from a variety of backgrounds, with a wide range of skills and experiences
  • Tech and data comfortable
  • Experience with digital organizing

Preferred Skills

  • Experience leading a relational organizing program in Texas or another state
  • Fluency in Spanish (written and spoken)

Political Intern

The Texas Democratic Party is seeking Political Interns. You will learn about modern political campaigns and play a role in our coordinated campaign effort to elect Democrats up and down the ballot across the entire state of Texas. Interns will get the opportunity to conduct research, work with VAN, assist in managing volunteers, create social media content, and support special projects as needed.

About you:
This is an entry level position, though competitive candidates will have some prior political experience. Please see the requirements below:

  • You are passionate about electing Democrats up and down the ballot across the state of Texas
  • You’re responsible and can complete projects in a timely manner, ask questions when they arise, and can ask for help when needed
  • Can work independently or as part of a team

A computer is required for this internship. The intern must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination is required. The internship is located in Austin for the Summer 2022 term and will require a 15 hour per week commitment.
