Ahead of Tonight’s Hondo City Council Meeting, Chairman Hinojosa and County Chairs Urge Local Leaders to Cancel Friends of NRA Event

AUSTIN, Texas — Today, ahead of tonight’s special Hondo City Council meeting to discuss the status of Saturday’s Friends of NRA fundraising event, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa, Uvalde County Democratic Party Chair Carlos Lopez, and Medina County Democratic Party Chair Sandy Young released the following joint statement:

“It goes without saying that to hold a fundraising event for the NRA just 40 miles from Uvalde, barely two months after the massacre at Robb Elementary, would be a gut-wrenching slap in the face to the Uvalde community. It also goes without saying that taxpayer resources should go nowhere near the promotion of this violent organization responsible for so much of the tragic inaction on gun violence in Texas.

“As we continue to wait for Republican state leadership to step up and address the massacre of 19 children and two teachers with the most basic of common-sense gun safety legislation, it is incumbent on local leaders to meet this moment and do what’s necessary to protect Texas children – however big or small the actions may be.

“That is why we strongly urge Hondo Mayor John McAnelly and the entire Hondo City Council to cancel this reckless fundraiser.”
