Chairman Hinojosa Releases Statement on Ruling Limiting AG Paxton’s Power to Overturn Elections
AUSTIN, Texas -- Today, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals denying indicted Attorney General Ken Paxton's request to reverse its earlier ruling that said the AG does not have unilateral power to prosecute election crimes:
“This entire case has been yet another example of Ken Paxton thinking that he’s above the law — and rejecting local power and the checks and balances that are built into our system. I’m glad to see that the Court rejected that notion, as the law required them to do.
“Ken Paxton has exploited his office and authority for his own ends time and again, and he was asking the Court to turn a blind eye to his abuse of power. While this ruling puts up some important guardrails, the only way to ensure Ken Paxton doesn’t continue his efforts to subvert the will of the voters and use his office to achieve his own political goals is to vote him out this November and elect Rochelle Garza. We need to put someone who respects the rule of law and has integrity back into the Attorney General’s office.”
