ICYMI: John Cornyn Was Once Known As Healthcare Repeal’s “Top Salesman”

Austin, TX — Today, ahead of the start of oral arguments for Texas v. United States, a lawsuit led by indicted Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton that threatens to repeal affordable healthcare and gut protections for as many as 133 million Americans, the Texas Democratic Party calls on John Cornyn to swiftly and unequivocally oppose this lawsuit.

Once known as healthcare repeal’s “top salesman”, Cornyn now has a choice to make: does he stand with the millions of Texans threatened to lose their protections for their pre-existing conditions or does he stand with pharmaceutical and insurance industry donors who have bankrolled his campaigns to the tune of almost $1.7 million over nearly two decades in Washington?

One thing is certain: Texas v. United States is a direct reflection of Cornyn’s efforts to take away protections for people with pre-existing conditions and increase health care costs on everyday Texans.

Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Manny Garcia issued the following statement:

“Healthcare is a fundamental human right. If this Trump Republican lawsuit isn’t stopped, millions of Americans will lose their access to quality, affordable healthcare. Not to mention, those with pre-existing conditions will be hamstrung and deductibles and copays will skyrocket.

“John Cornyn continues to bow down to insurance companies, instead of protecting Texans from rising healthcare costs and losing their health insurance. It’s past time for Cornyn to oppose the Republican attacks on pre-existing condition protections.”
