AUSTIN, Texas–Just last week Gov. Greg Abbott said the state’s power grid was fixed in time for the oppressive Texas summer heat. But just today, a week before summer officially begins, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is again asking consumers across the state to conserve electricity to avoid another failure.
Gov. Abbott and state Republican leaders held a press conference last week to say they had worked to pass legislation that fixed all the issues with the state’s electrical grid. Experts, however, cited significant problems and said the “fixes” would do nothing to add more capacity to the grid or prevent it from failing again.
Under Gov. Abbott’s watch, ERCOT was forced to cut off power in order to save a complete collapse of the state’s grid, a gargantuan failure of leadership that killed an estimated 700 Texans. It is the largest forced power outage in U.S. history and it was seconds from a complete collapse.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“It is incomprehensible how badly Greg Abbott handled the emergency situation back in February. The system didn’t fail due to extreme weather — it was a failure of Republican leadership over decades to plan and invest in our state and fellow Texans. Instead of pushing anti-voting laws and focusing on restricting access to abortion, Greg Abbott and the Republican-dominated legislature should have been focusing on fixing the state’s grid. By not doing so in this session, they failed yet again to take the needs of our state seriously and to plan for the future.
“Enough is enough. Texans are dying while the GOP panders to Trump and chases political points during one of the most important and challenging times in our history. Greg Abbott and our Republican state leaders need to be voted out.”
