Cancun Cruz Flees Texas in our Greatest Time of Need, Goes on Vacation in Mexico, as 37 of his Constituents have Died From This Tragedy. Hundreds of Thousands Remain Without Power; Millions Do Not Have Access to Clean Water Or Food.
Texas Republicans Don’t Give a Damn About You or Me
Austin, Texas — In the middle of one of the worst crises in Texas history, Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz jetted off to Cancun, Mexico. His constituents in Texas remain trapped in the cold, without clean water, heat, or warm food. 37 of them have died.
This is what we’ve come to expect from Texas Republican leadership. They are self-serving, inept, corrupt politicians who think that being in office entitles them to do whatever they want.
Here is a list of actions Ted Cruz could take to support Texans RIGHT NOW, if he were still in the state:
-
Provide useful information to Texans about when our water and power will come back on
-
Source generators to people without power who need them for medical devices
-
Address food insecurity and the growing statewide food shortage
-
Deliver food and water to his constituents, like the Mayor of McKinney
-
Use the money he spent on his family’s vacation to provide hotel rooms for Texans in need
-
Work with businesses and local leaders to make resources available to hospitals so they can come back online after evacuations
-
Work on an energy plan that will provide reliable electricity long-term to Texan homes and businesses
-
Figure out how to distribute COVID vaccinations during our weather crisis
-
Work with ERCOT Board members and demand accountability from them
-
Host people who do not have power or water in his home, as Texans across the state are currently doing
In case you need a reminder, here is what real leadership looks like:
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Ted Cruz jetting off to Mexico while Texans remain dying in the cold isn’t surprising but it is deeply disturbing and disappointing. Cruz is emblematic of what the Texas Republican Party and its leaders have become: weak, corrupt, inept, and self-serving politicians who don’t give a damn about the people they were elected to represent. They were elected by the people but have no interest or intent of doing their jobs.
“Ted Cruz had already proven to be an enemy to our democracy by inciting an insurrection. Now, he is proving to be an enemy to our state by abandoning us in our greatest time of need. For the 21st time, the Texas Democratic Party calls on Ted Cruz to resign or be expelled from office. Barring that, we will put all of the resources we have into defeating him and every Texas Republican who abandoned us in this disaster, including Governor Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Patrick, in 2022 and 2024. We are in a battle for the soul of our state. We must restore ethics, competence, and a government that works for the people.”
