RELEASE: Texas Democrats Secure the Release of Michael Quinn Sullivan — Dennis Bonnen Dark Money Recording

Austin, TX — Today, hours before a scheduled court hearing in Texas Democratic Party’s lawsuit where a judge would be asked to order the release of the recording, conservative dark money operative Michael Quinn Sullivan released his secret recording of a meeting with Speaker Dennis Bonnen.

While listening to this recording, one thing became very clear: Texans deserve full transparency, openness in their government, and accountability from their elected officials. Without the leadership of the Texas Democratic Party and Rep. Ana-Maria Ramos, state leaders may have been successful in forever suppressing this shocking evidence of political corruption by the Speaker of the Texas House.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Texans are fed up with backroom deals, cover-ups, and unaccountable politicians who put the pursuit of power over everything. Now more than ever, it is clear that only the election of Texas Democrats will result in a return of ethics in state government.

“Speaker Bonnen’s potentially illegal backroom dealings and derogatory comments about duly-elected Democratic members of the Texas House are beneath what Texans deserve from their Speaker of the Texas House.

“Texans have heard the Speaker in his own words, ‘Let me tell you what I can do for you.’  Speaker Bonnen’s apology is the latest attempt to cover up that he abused his office.

“Texans deserve to know what happens in their government on their dime and that elected officials are getting their job done, not scheming to abuse power. We will continue to seek the truth and get down to the bottom of what exactly happened in our Texas Capitol.”
