San Antonio Express-News: “Cruz is Still Dodging Tough Questions” on “Past Efforts to Impose a National Abortion Ban”
AUSTIN, Texas – A column by the San Antonio Express-News’ Chris Tomlinson today highlights how Ted Cruz is hiding from his long record of working to ban abortion.
San Antonio Express News: Tomlinson: Character is critical in the U.S. Senate race in Texas. Colin Allred has it. Ted Cruz doesn't.
By Chris Tomlinson
I first met Cruz when I interviewed him for the Associated Press in 2012, where I wrote the first national, mainstream story written about him. In his stump speech, Cruz liked to call politicians "blood-sucking parasites" and proof that "invertebrates can walk upright."
When it came to policy details, though, Cruz himself was as slippery as a worm.
Twelve years later, Cruz is still dodging tough questions, especially about his past efforts to impose a national abortion ban. After a decade of denouncing abortion exceptions for victims of rape and incest, Cruz today refuses to discuss the issue.
What’s objectionable is his lack of integrity in defending those positions when asked.
Voters have rewarded Cruz’s bombastic hyperbole, but he treats legislating like a college debate competition. If we want better governance, Texans should vote for character over spectacle if we're going to unite the country.
