Breaking: San Antonio Federal Judge Stops SB 4 “Show-Me-Your-Papers” Bill

Austin, TX — Today, San Antonio Federal Judge Orlando Garcia halted the main provisions of Senate Bill 4 (SB 4), the Texas Republican racist “show-me-your-papers” bill which would have taken effect on Friday, September 1. [San Antonio Express News, August 30, 2017]

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Texans are still under threat from a catastrophic hurricane and the last thing they need is Trump’s deportation force.

“Texas Democrats applaud the Court’s decision to immediately halt Gov. Greg Abbott’s dangerous bill.

“Our communities and police chiefs understand the ‘show-me-your-papers’ bill is dangerous and makes no one safer.

“We thank all the families, cities, counties, law enforcement officials, progressive advocates, and Texas Democrats who are fighting this dangerous legislation.

“Tomorrow, as our families continue to recover from Hurricane Harvey, at the very least they will not be subjected to the threat of SB 4. The fight against Trump’s deportation force is nowhere near over. There is much work to be done and we will provide more information in the coming days.”
