Austin, Texas — The “top salesman” for repealing the Affordable Care Act was at it again this morning, using the rushed Senate Judiciary Committee vote on an anti-health care Supreme Court nominee to attack the health care law millions of Texans with preexisting medical conditions rely on.
During the committee meeting, Cornyn launched into an attack on the ACA and the people it protects, saying that the health care law had “failed.”
This is a return to true form for Cornyn, who has voted 20 times to repeal, dismantle, or gut the ACA and its protections for people with preexisting conditions. Several months ago, Cornyn praised the ACA for its role in helping people affected by the coronavirus crisis, saying, “The good news is that if you lose your employer-provided coverage… then that is a significant life event, which makes you then eligible to sign up for the Affordable Care Act.”
As the ACA’s pre-existing conditions protections remain extremely popular, Cornyn, who voted this month in favor of the Trump administration’s lawsuit to dismantle the ACA and its preexisting condition protections in the Supreme Court, is running false ads claiming he supports protecting people with preexisting conditions, in a desperate election-year attempt to rewrite his record of voting repeatedly to rip away those protections.
Despite his decade-long crusade to repeal the ACA, Cornyn does not have a health care plan of his own that would protect people with preexisting conditions.
Texas Democratic Party Cornyn War Room Spokesperson Billy Begala released the following statement:
“Today, John Cornyn showed what his rush to confirm this anti-health care judge is really about: dismantling the ACA and its protections for millions of Texans with preexisting conditions. Texans know that Cornyn continues to be a grave threat to their ability to access quality, affordable health care.”
