Cornyn’s Toxic Record and the Lies He’s Told Trying to Cover It Up

Austin, Texas — Vulnerable incumbent Senator John Cornyn has a toxic 18 year record of serving DC special interests in the U.S. Senate. Now, as his reelection prospects grow slimmer by the day, Cornyn is desperately lying to try and cover up his abysmal record.

Unfortunately for him, we have the receipts:

Preexisting Conditions:

Cornyn’s Campaign Lie:

Cornyn is running an ad claiming “preexisting conditions is something we all agree should be covered,” and that “with John Cornyn’s plan, they will be covered.”

Cornyn’s Real Record:

Cornyn has voted 20 times to dismantle, gut, or repeal the Affordable Care Act and its protections for people with preexisting conditions. He voted in favor of the Trump administration’s lawsuit seeking to dismantle the ACA in the Supreme Court, and is in the midst of rushing through an anti-health care lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.

The Washington Post fact checker concluded Cornyn’s ad on preexisting conditions deserved four pinocchios, reserved for a “whopper” of a lie.

Protecting DACA Recipients:

Cornyn’s Campaign Lie:

In an ad, Cornyn claims that he “strongly supports the legalization of Dreamers.”

Cornyn’s Real Record:

In both 2007 and 2010, Cornyn voted against advancing the DREAM Act, calling the 2010 effort a political stunt.” In 2017, after the Trump administration announced an end to the DACA program (a decision that was eventually overturned by the Supreme Court), Cornyn stated “there’s no way” a standalone DREAM Act would pass the Senate. Cornyn then yet again used Dreamers as political pawns, tying the future of DACA recipients to border wall funding, and insisting on a “right-wing Christmas list of anti-immigrant provisions” in exchange for protections for 124,000 Texans.

America’s Voice, an immigrant advocacy group, dubbed this cynical ploy the “Cornyn Con,” and said, “If it were not for two-faced politicians like John Cornyn, we would have millions of Dreamers and other immigrants on a path to citizenship.”

Standing Up to Donald Trump

Cornyn’s Campaign Lie:

In interviews with various newspaper editorial boards, Cornyn claimed that he disagreed with President Trump on issues like the border wall, the growing deficit, and Trump’s COVID response, but didn’t tell anyone.

Cornyn’s Real Record:

Cornyn has marched – and voted – in lockstep with Trump.

Cornyn voted TWICE to allow the Trump administration to siphon money away from Texas military families for border wall construction – funding that Texas, unlike other states, will not have restored.

Cornyn voted to add nearly $2 trillion to the national debt when he supported the 2017 GOP tax law’s giveaways to his wealthy donors and corporate special interest allies.

Cornyn has supported and praised Trump’s COVID response, saying “We’ve all tried to do our best” and that Trump “led well” on the virus. Cornyn also echoed Trump’s racist rhetoric, calling COVID-19 the “China Virus” and blaming it on Chinese “culture where people eat bats and snakes and dogs and things like that.”

Cornyn joined Trump in downplaying the virus, spreading misinformation, pushing for premature reopenings and undermining public health experts.

Cornyn votes with Trump 95% of the time.

Lowering Prescription Drug Prices

Cornyn’s Campaign Lie:

Cornyn claimed in an ad that he has a plan that “lowers the cost of prescription drugs.”

Cornyn’s Real Record:

Cornyn voted at least five times against allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices. In 2019, Cornyn attacked a bill that would have allowed Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices and would have achieved an estimated $345 billion in Medicare savings.

At the behest of pharma lobbyists, Cornyn rewrote a bill that would have “rein[ed] in patent abuses,” delivering a “win” for the drug industry.

Cornyn voted to “gut the core proposal” of a bipartisan effort to rein in prescription drug costs.

Cornyn repeatedly voted against cracking down on “Pay-For-Delay” deals that let Big Pharma companies pay generic producers to delay cheaper versions of drugs from being sold to consumers.

Cornyn has taken over $1.4 million from the pharmaceutical industry while in the Senate.

Texas Democratic Party Deputy Cornyn War Room Spokesperson Billy Begala released the following statement:

“John Cornyn’s 18 years in the Senate have been spent carrying water for corporate PACs and D.C. special interests while selling out hardworking Texans. Now, rather than own his record, Cornyn is lying to the people of Texas in an attempt to get reelected. Unfortunately for Cornyn, Texans can smell his election-year B.S. from a mile away.”
