REMINDER: Cruz Leading the Charge to Ban Mifepristone
AUSTIN, Texas – Today the Supreme Court is hearing a case that could further restrict access to abortion by invalidating the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, which is safely used in more than half of all abortions in the United States.
Ted Cruz has been a key voice in fighting to ban access to mifepristone:
In 2020, Cruz organized a letter to FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn demanding that they ban access to mifepristone. The letter baselessly calls mifepristone a “deadly pill” that “should never have been approved,” though the FDA has reaffirmed its safety several times since 2000.
Cruz signed on to an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to limit access to mifepristone that claimed the FDA “endangered patient health and safety.”
Business Insider reported that Cruz was “castigated” for a tweet saying “Pregnancy is not a life-threatening illness.”
Cruz further believes that abortion should be outlawed even in the cases of rape or incest.
Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Monique Alcala:
“Ted Cruz’s push to ban access to medication abortion is his latest effort to take away Texas women’s freedom to make their own medical choices. Texans are going to hold him accountable for his record of working to roll back our freedoms, not protect them.”
