Chairman Hinojosa Applauds President Biden’s Actions on Marijuana Reform
AUSTIN, Texas -- Today, following President Biden’s major announcement on actions he’s taking on marijuana reform – including pardoning all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession, calling on governors to pardon simple state marijuana possession offenses, and asking HHS and the DOJ to review how marijuana is scheduled under federal law – Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement:
“I applaud President Biden for blazing a trail today with his bold, decisive actions – both in making a monumental step in righting the wrongs of the past, as well as in helping ensure that Americans in the future are no longer subject to the same wrong-headed and archaic thinking that brought us here, to a system where marijuana is considered under law to be more serious than fentanyl.
“This is, of course, an issue of criminal and social justice – but it’s also a matter of simple common sense. Voters of all political ideologies – from every corner of Texas and this country – agree: marijuana should be legalized for medical and recreational usage, regulated under common-sense laws, taxed to help bring in much-needed revenue for critical governmental services.
“Let me be blunt: it is long past time that we legalize marijuana in Texas – and when we win at the statewide level this November, Democrats will do just that.”
