Happy National Farmers Day, Texas Democrats Continue to Fight for Texas Farmers and Ranchers

In honor of National Farmers Day, Texas Democrats, including statewide candidates Susan Hays, Democratic Nominee for Agriculture Commissioner and Jay Kleberg, Democratic Nominee for Land Commissioner, are banding together in gratitude of — and continued support for — our Texas’ farming and ranching communities. 

 “Too often, government leaders pay lip service to honoring farmers and don’t do the work to actually help them thrive,” said Susan Hays, Democratic Nominee for Agriculture Commissioner. “We need to cleanse the Ag Commission of its corruption, and rebuild a support infrastructure for farmers to help them get their products to market for the best price, fight against corporate price-gouging of inputs, and live healthy lives with access to good healthcare.”

“Farmers and ranchers are the foundation of Texas’ heritage, and as the next Texas Land Commissioner I will do everything in my power to honor the legacy and future of Texas agriculture,” said Jay Kleberg, Democratic Nominee for Land Commissioner. “When all Texans have access to the necessary resources to produce food and fiber, Texas becomes more resilient and we all benefit.”\

Hays’ and Kleberg’s policy proposals align with their commitment to supporting Texas farmers: 

Hays is committed to innovating new models for economically and environmentally sustainable agriculture and finding solutions that “work smarter to avoid another Dust Bowl.” She believes the job of the Ag Commissioner is to lead the way to making a living off the land in modern times and fight against Wall Street exploitation of farmers. Famously, Hays is a cannabis lawyer who helped draft and pass the law that legalized hemp in Texas. She is advocating to make sure small farms and businesses can get in on the ground level with cannabis cultivation, processing, and retail.

In the Land Commissioner’s oversight of disaster related funding, Kleberg is fighting to make sure our agricultural communities don’t get overlooked like they have under our current state administration. Kleberg is fighting for federal funding that will pay landowners and farm owners to upgrade to regenerative agricultural practices that have been proven to increase yield and financial stability. Jay is also committed to helping achieve racial equity for farmers — he’ll work to fight for titles for Black and Brown farmers and ranchers to ensure they have access to federal agriculture assistance programs.
