RELEASE: COVID-19 Cases in Texas Skyrocket as Omicron Variant Continues to Rage

Despite Record-Breaking Covid-Cases, Texas Republicans Continue to Work Against Public Health Efforts and Rally The Courts In Halting Vaccine Mandates

Austin, Texas – Covid-19 is surging once again throughout Texas and in just two weeks the number of kids hospitalized with Covid-19 at Texas Children's has quadrupled. Positivity rates are at an astounding 34%. Meanwhile, Greg Abbott and Republican leaders  are working against local efforts to protect our children and our communities from this ongoing health crisis.

Instead of stepping-up and helping us get through the worst surge in the pandemic, Abbott is choosing to wager our health and safety to gain political points with right-winged anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers.  His latest challenge of federal vaccine mandate policy  aimed at reducing the number of Covid-19 infections is just one of his many poor decisions that has led to an overwhelmingly high infection rate caused by the Omicron variant.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“As millions of children and Texans are at risk of contracting the highly contagious Covid-19 Omicron variant, Texas Republicans continue to get in the way of important public health policies– placing additional strain on our hospitals and entire healthcare system.

“Greg Abbott and Texas Republican leaders never developed a plan for mitigating the spread of the virus and Abbott continues to remain silent during this horrific crisis.  When we need leadership the most, his only response is to seize the moment for a political move by launching a ridiculous lawsuit against the Biden Administration over vaccine mandates.

“Our communities and local leaders are once again faced with having to fight both the pandemic and our Republican-run state government. Both continue to wreak havoc and put our lives in danger. Fortunately, one of them can be defeated this year and can never again stand in the way of us protecting our families and our communities.

“The failed leadership of Abbott and Texas Republicans will no longer be tolerated and we will continue to work everyday to make sure all those who recklessly put politics over the protection of people’s health and safety will never again be elected into a position of power.”
