Republicans Work to Strip Texans of Lifesaving COVID Funding

AUSTIN, Texas – Thanks to the leadership of Democrats, we have made significant strides in getting the COVID-19 pandemic under control. At every turn, Democrats have shown up and ensured that Texans had the resources they needed to survive. Republicans have decided that it is more important to oppress the poor and block access to health care for millions of Texans than it is to support working families.

Republicans refuse to vote for funding that would ensure that uninsured Americans have access to free COVID-19 testing. Now working class Texans may have to foot a $200 bill in order to be tested. This will undoubtedly be a setback in our fight against the virus and disproportionately impact communities of color. It is appalling to think that Texas Republicans continue to engage in performative theater instead of fulfilling their duty to serve the people they represent.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Republicans are sending Texas families into financial ruin by denying them access to health care. We have come to a point where the opposing political party stands for nothing, they debate scenarios they have pulled out of thin air; avoiding all sources of truth for the sake of stripping away the freedoms they swore to protect. Texas Democrats represent all Texans and will use every tool at our disposal to protect our freedoms. Republicans will not get away with their latest grift off the backs of hard working Texans.

“As we approach the November elections, we have to remember that the only way to protect our freedoms is at the ballot box. We cannot allow Texas Republicans and their cronies to run our state into the ground because they are a group of inept and ineffective elected officials.”
