Texas Republican Extremist Rep. Pete Sessions to Enter U.S. Speaker of the House Race, Doubling Down on MAGA Circus in GOP Conference

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement after Texas Republican extremist Rep. Pete Sessions announced his intent to run for Speaker of the House:

“The last thing Americans need is a MAGA Texas Republican like Pete Sessions as Speaker of the House. Sessions has a long history of being on the wrong side of history – like voting against the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act less than one month after the Uvalde massacre, endorsing policies that strip away Texans’ access to abortion, voting to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and running for Congress several districts over after losing to Colin Allred in 2018. Sessions’s allegiance to the MAGA agenda has only hurt his constituents here in Texas – all while he lines his pockets with cash from shady billionaires and Russian assets like Rudy Giuliani.

“Over and over again – from the local to national level – MAGA Republicans in leadership have proven they are unwilling to meet the needs of the moment. We’re witnessing an all-out brawl within the Republican Party play out in real time – and working Texas families will continue to suffer as a result. Our Texas Democrats in Congress stood firmly against Jim Jordan’s nomination because they know that his – and his party’s – political showmanship will ultimately lead to continued chaos within the House of Representatives instead of delivering results for communities. MAGA Republicans’ reign in Congress is a dumpster fire – and there’s no doubt that Pete Sessions is wholly incapable of putting it out.”
