Republican Extremist Rep. Mike Johnson Elected to the U.S. Speaker of the House, Enabling MAGA Circus in GOP

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement after House Republicans elected MAGA Republican extremist Rep. Mike Johnson to the U.S. Speaker of the House:

“Absolutely no one is surprised that MAGA Republicans chose to elect known election denier Mike Johnson as the latest ringleader of their circus. Now that the Republican-led Congress has lifted their self-inflicted paralysis weeks ahead of a government shutdown, Texans can expect their push for an alt-right overhaul of government budget funding aimed at cutting Social Security, Medicaid, public education, federal voting rights and vital government programs that keep working families afloat. Mike Johnson’s track record of election denialism poses a real threat to our by empowering insurrectionists and anti-democracy movements. An extremist MAGA Republican and Trump’s right hand man as the third most powerful leader will only ensure nationwide chaos leading up to the 2024 election. 

“It’s evident that the only unifying factor of MAGA Republicans in the U.S. House is their love for disgraced former President Donald Trump and their hatred for democracy  Our Texas Democrats in Congress took a firm stance against Mike Johnson’s nomination because they know that the billionaire-backed extremist agenda set forth by MAGA Republicans will lead to further divisions in our country – leaving working families behind and the state of our election laws in jeopardy. And based on the results of MAGA Republicans’ disastrous reign in Congress – the countdown to the end of Mike Johnson’s tenure as Speaker of the House starts right now.
