Texas Democratic Party Statement on the Fifth Anniversary of the El Paso Walmart Shooting
AUSTIN, Texas – Five years ago today, an act of domestic terrorism struck the city of El Paso when a gunman, motivated by xenophobic and racist ideologies, opened fire in a Walmart shopping center – claiming 23 innocent lives and leaving countless families and the community devastated. Today and everyday we stand with El Paso as we work towards eradicating senseless gun violence and hateful rhetoric that fuels it.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement:
"The El Paso shooting is a painful reminder of the consequences of hate speech and rhetoric that Texas MAGA Republicans have bestowed upon our communities. For years, Donald Trump and his loyal followers have demonized Latino immigrants, spreading false narratives and fostering an environment of fear and division. This toxic discourse has emboldened extremists like the El Paso shooter, and led to acts of violence that tear apart the very fabric of our society.
“It is imperative that we stand united against such divisive rhetoric and work towards a future rooted in compassion, understanding, and respect for all. The Texas Democratic Party unequivocally condemns the dangerous and divisive ‘Great Replacement’ theory propagated within the Texas GOP and across the nation. And, we continue our fight for gun safety legislation, including enhanced background checks, mental health support, and community-based interventions like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which Ted Cruz opposed without hesitation.
“We call on all Texans to join us in reflection and commit to building a society free from hate and violence. Diversity is our strength, and together we can work towards a more peaceful and harmonious future.”
