Day Six of Testimony in Ken Paxton’s Impeachment Zero-in on Paxton’s Web of Lies and Corruption
AUSTIN, Texas – The impeachment trial of Attorney General Ken Paxton continues to unravel a complex narrative of abuse of power and ethical negligence. From the start, Paxton has been accused of abusing the power of his office to benefit his friend and donor, Nate Paul. This trial has been a series of damning testimonies from former public servants and now, Brandon Cammack, whose involvement is evidence of the lack of integrity and transparency of the Attorney General's office.
In summary:
Indicted, suspended and impeached Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was not present for the sixth day of his impeachment trial.
Brandon Cammack, a Houston defense lawyer, was hired by Paxton to investigate Nate Paul's claims about altered search warrants. Cammack reported directly to Paxton. Though the AG’s staff had already found Nate Paul’s allegations to be false, Paxton doubled-down on his fat cat campaign donor’s request for further intervention from the State of Texas.
Cammack revealed that he communicated with Paxton through encrypted means at Paxton’s direction. Cammack received a second complaint from Nate Paul alleging wrongful foreclosures on his properties. Despite lacking experience in bankruptcy or mortgage fraud, Cammack proceeded as Paxton assured him his contract covered this. This resulted in 39 subpoenas based on directives from Paul’s lawyers - not from the Attorney General’s staff nor the District Attorney’s office.
Cammack's contract was terminated soon after, and he was told he would not be compensated, causing Cammack to question the legitimacy of his hiring and the work he conducted. Cammack still hasn’t been paid.
Paxton whistleblower Darren McCarty testified that Paxton took an abnormal interest in Nate Paul’s lawsuit with the Mitte Foundation, a non-profit charity that sued Paul over fraud.
Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Today, Texans learned through Brandon Cammack’s eye-opening testimony that the Attorney General had hired outside legal counsel to investigate Nate Paul’s baseless claims in an attempt to further shield himself from legal accountability. This damning evidence and testimony clearly shows Paxton’s Attorney General’s Office was being completely controlled by someone that wasn’t elected to public office.
“Ken Paxton is a liar, cheat and a fraud. And based on countless hours of testimony, his reckless behavior carried over into his office’s workload and environment – causing significant damage within the OAG. Paxton has permanently jeopardized the legitimacy of this incredibly important state agency. Texans don’t trust the Attorney General’s office to work in support of their best interests.
