GET THE FACTS: Ted Cruz’s Record of Taking Away Womens’ Reproductive Rights
AUSTIN, Texas – Ted Cruz has worked for years to undermine Texans’ reproductive rights and take away their ability to make their own healthcare decisions. Get the facts about Cruz’s record below:
Cruz supports “personhood,” which would threaten access to IVF and birth control, and ban all abortions:
Cruz has “enthusiastically” supported so-called “personhood” measures that could impact not just the use of IVF but access to contraception — from IUDs to over-the-counter emergency contraceptives.
Cruz signed on to a “personhood affirmation” declaring his support for a constitutional amendment that would ban abortion from conception.
Cruz proudly supports Texas’ extreme abortion ban:
Cruz said “In the state of Texas we have significant limits restricting abortion… and I agree with that.”
He called the state ban “perfectly reasonable.”
Cruz is against exceptions for rape and incest:
“Cruz said states should be allowed to ban abortion even in cases of rape and incest.”
Cruz promised to support “any…legislation that defends the rights of all persons without exceptions…”
Cruz was asked whether he was “against abortion even in cases of rape or incest.” He responded, “Yes.”
Cruz has said: “When it comes to rape… I don’t believe it’s the child’s fault.”
Cruz pushed for the end of Roe, which has let many of these extreme bans go into effect:
Cruz has long believed “the right outcome is to overturn Roe v. Wade,” and said that he prayed for it to be overturned.
Cruz repeatedly filed amicus briefs urging SCOTUS to overturn Roe v. Wade.
He praised the Dobbs decision as “nothing short of a massive victory.”
In the Senate – right now – Cruz is leading the charge to ban medication abortion:
In 2020, Cruz organized a letter demanding that the FDA ban access to mifepristone.
The letter baselessly calls mifepristone a “deadly pill” that “should never have been approved,” though the FDA has reaffirmed its safety several times since 2000.
Business Insider reported that Cruz was “castigated” for a tweet saying “Pregnancy is not a life-threatening illness.”
