Chairman Hinojosa Releases Statement on Judge Hidalgo’s Leave of Absence to Receive Mental Health Treatment

AUSTIN, Texas -- Today, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement on Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s announcement that she is taking a brief leave of absence to seek treatment for clinical depression:

“I speak for Texans across the state when I say to Judge Hidalgo: we are proud of you for your courageous decision to publicly address your need for mental health treatment – and we are with you for as long as it takes to get the care you need.

“Far too many Texans suffer from mental health conditions and disabilities – both due to our state’s tragic lack of access to healthcare for vast swaths of our population, as well as because of the stigma attached to mental health issues and the pride attached to ‘toughing it out’ through whatever someone’s disorder may be.

“By publicly addressing both her disorder – as well as her brave decision to seek treatment for it – Judge Hidalgo has likely saved lives today, opening the door for other suffering Texans to feel comfortable getting the help they desperately need.

“Judge: our prayers are with you. You’re a true chingona — one of the toughest, most badass women in our state – and we have no doubt you’re going to come out on the other side of this even stronger than you were before, ready as ever to continue leading the citizens of Harris County with your trademark combination of prudence and gusto.
