SPLIT SCREEN: Republicans Attack Public Education, Texas Democrats Stand Up to Protect It
AUSTIN, Texas – It’s a clear contrast: as Donald Trump guts the Department of Education, using mass layoffs as the “first steps” to “shut down the Department,” Texas Democrats are standing strong with public schools against attacks by Texas Republicans and Greg Abbott’s voucher scam.
REPUBLICAN ATTACKS:
What Texas could lose if the Education Department is dismantled
Donald Trump’s fulfillment of the Project 2025 objective to “slash federal funds to public schools” would have devastating consequences for Texas families.
Laying off all employees of the Department of Education’s Dallas office today is just the latest – “billions of dollars flow to Texas” for “schools, student services” “financial aid” and “protecting civil rights.”
“Federal funding made up 18% of Texas' public school budget.”
DEMOCRATS FIGHTING FOR STUDENTS:
Public pushes back on Texas school voucher bill in daylong hearing
That’s why Democrats are standing up – against Greg Abbott’s school voucher scam and for Texas working families.
Abbott himself has said that his voucher scheme could lead to less funding for Texas public schools.
Yesterday “hundreds of Texans” signed up to testify against HB 3, an overwhelmingly unpopular effort opposed by a “supermajority of Texas voters,” in a marathon session that ran nearly 24 hours.
As one longtime HISD educator made plain: “This is about dismantling the public school system.”
