San Antonio Nurses Speak Out Against Cruz’s Harmful Abortion Record

“I Have Voted for Politicians From Both Parties... Freedom Is Important to Me.”

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Today two San Antonio registered nurses, along with Laurel Jordan Swift, candidate for Texas HD-121, called out Ted Cruz for his role in restricting Texans’ abortion access. Speakers highlighted Cruz's efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade and help establish the near-total abortion ban Texans are living through today. A ban he called “perfectly reasonable.”

Maria, a San Antonio-based registered nurse, said:

“When it comes to lifesaving and emergency health care, two things are clear. Everyone deserves access to safe, reliable care – and they deserve the chance to make vital decisions about their own health and wellbeing with the help of a trusted medical professional. But thanks to Ted Cruz’s abortion ban, those principles are under attack.

“It didn’t have to be this way. Ted Cruz knew what would happen when he helped elect the state legislators responsible for Texas’ near-total abortion ban. He knew what Texas women would face when Roe v. Wade fell, after he confirmed judges and justices to the bench who would dismantle it… His ‘massive victory’ – that’s what he called the end of Roe – would be complete. The only problem? Texans disagree. We believe in freedom, and the ability to make our own decisions about our own lives.”

Deborah, a San Antonio-based registered nurse, said:

“We’re here to talk about the abortion ban Ted Cruz laid the groundwork for, advocated for, and strongly supports. He won’t tell you that – not in an election year – but his record makes it clear. I have voted for politicians from both parties, Republicans and Democrats. I’m a Texan. Freedom is important to me. And when you look at the tragic reality that so many Texas women are living through right now, freedom is not part of it.

“I cannot stand by while women are fleeing our state by the thousands to receive the care they need, in many cases lifesaving care, to save their own lives or a much-wanted pregnancy. But that’s exactly what Ted Cruz wants. How do we know that? Because he campaigned for the authors of the Texas abortion ban. It’s why he got judges and justices appointed who would overturn Roe v. Wade. And it’s why he celebrated what happened when Roe fell.”

Laurel Jordan Swift, Democratic nominee for Texas HD-121, said:

“[Cruz] confirmed judges and justices to the bench that have been instrumental in taking away abortion rights. Cruz attacked reproductive freedom from every angle in the Senate – cosponsoring abortion bans, pushing to outlaw mifepristone. And just this year, looking back on his handiwork, he signed his name to a resolution celebrating the end of Roe v. Wade.

“Let’s be clear: Ted Cruz called Texas’ abortion ban ‘perfectly reasonable.’ But for the millions of Texans who’ve witnessed the reality that Cruz’s efforts have put us through, there’s nothing ‘perfectly reasonable’ about any of this.”
